The characters most consistently associated with town hall, however, have more said about them than they say about themselves. One way to contextualize the different narratives in the Anthology is to consider the different institutions in the town, as well as the handful of characters most closely associated with each.Ī wealthy and influential political establishment stands at the center of Spoon River life. Although each of the book's characters speaks only once, several of the town's most influential residents are mentioned repeatedly. Instead, as the 243 individual speakers in the book tell about their own lives, a portrait of life in the Spoon River village gradually emerges. Spoon River Anthology tells a story, but it does not employ a typical linear narrative.
